Behind your favorite mouthwatering cookbook and tempting Instagram post is a profession the average person may not consider: a food stylist. Food stylists are masters in plating for the camera. With their culinary expertise and tricks of the trade, they style food so irresistible it sells itself.

Whether you have an upcoming photoshoot or product launch, or are simply struggling to get your food to pop on camera, it’s time to hire a food stylist. In this guide, I’ll break down how to choose a food stylist who aligns with your brand, understands your goals, and can execute at the level your product demands.

What is a Food Stylist?

A food stylist is a creative professional with the skills and knowledge to make food look its best in photos and videos. They work in tandem with photographers on shoots for print, editorial, social media, commercials, and more. It’s a food stylist’s job to set the scene, prepare the food, and use tools and techniques to tell your story through food.

What Does a Food Stylist Do?

A food stylist does so much more than just arranging food. It’s their job to tell a story that helps you taste the food without ever taking a bite. Every visual food component is the responsibility of a food stylist and their work begins long before the day of the shoot. Here’s how their process works:

  • Research: When a food stylist takes on a project, their first step is to research the elements the shoot will require. A steak may need grill marks, a beverage may need artificial ice. A food stylist needs to figure out how to bring the food to life, as well as the steps they’ll need to take to do so.

  • Shopping: Next, it’s time to go shopping, and not just to the grocery store. In addition to purchasing the ingredients, a food stylist needs to gather elements to enhance the image, from dishware to cutlery, garnishes, linens, backdrops, and other curated items. Sometimes, a food stylist may need to source rare ingredients or hard-to-find props. They’ll need to provide all these items on set.

  • Planning: The next thing a food stylist does is put together a plan. The photoshoot requires a food stylist’s full attention, so everything that can be done ahead of time helps the shoot move more smoothly. Food stylists are often help inform the shot list, too. This outlines the order in which each shot needs to be prepared.

  • Styling: All this hard work leads to set day. A food stylist shows up fully prepared with pre-made food, ingredients, props, and the shot list so they can get to work. Food stylists work in tandem with the photographer and the client to set up each shoot, prepare the food, and arrange it just so. While the photographer is at work, the food stylist begins preparing for the next shot. All the while, they’re refreshing elements and making adjustments to ensure the food stays looking its best.

When to Hire a Food Stylist

If you want to take your marketing from fine to irresistible, you should hire a food stylist. Here are just a few scenarios in which you’ll benefit from a food stylist.

If you’re already investing in a professional shoot

Photographers and videographers are masters of their craft, but their expertise is behind the camera. A food stylist is an expert at the subject matter itself. Even with a renowned photographer, professional lighting, and a fully equipped studio, without a food stylist, you risk poor results. Your food stylist makes sure your food looks appetizing and stays fresh, even under studio lights.

If your food tends to fall flat on camera

Do you find that, while your food looks mouth-watering in person, it seems to fall flat in every photo? That’s because what looks delicious in real life doesn’t always translate. Without a food stylist, food can look dull, lack texture, or look otherwise unappealing. Food stylists have the expertise to make sure this doesn’t happen.

If you’re launching a new product

We all know first impressions are everything, and food is no different. Your food stylist can ensure your new product looks great from day one, everywhere it appears, whether on packaging, on your website, or in advertising.

What to Do (and Not to Do) When Choosing a Food Stylist

By now it should be clear: you need a food stylist! But what separates the good food stylists from the great? Follow these tips to choose the best food stylist.

Don’t: Fixate too much on specific elements

Many potential clients get too fixated on certain elements in their search for a food stylist. Say you want a video of your mozzarella sticks’ cheese pull. You may be inclined to hunt down a food stylist with the perfect cheese pull photos.  But just because a stylist can create a successful cheese pull doesn’t mean they’re a great match. What about the other elements in their photos? What are they like to work with on set? These are important questions, too.

Do: Think bigger picture

Instead of focusing on a single element in your photo, think about the bigger picture. Are the photos on their website captivating? Do they match the vibe you’re looking for? Do you like their style? What are they like to work with on set? These are important questions, too. Consider the whole picture, rather than just a single element.

Do: Have a conversation

The deciding factor when choosing a food stylist shouldn’t come from scrolling through photos. It comes from having a conversation. Once you’ve found a food stylist whose photos you like, have a chat. Ask how they’d approach a specific shot or achieve a specific goal. Do you get a good feeling from them? Do your working styles mesh? These types of questions are far more beneficial.

Tips for successfully collaborating with a food stylist

Once you’ve chosen a great food stylist, it’s time to get to work. Here are a few tips to help your collaboration go more smoothly.

Talk about your shot list

Shoot day always goes better when everyone knows what they’re getting into. Before finalizing your shot list, talk to your food stylist about it. They’ll have a good grasp on what’s doable in the given time frame, how to order each shot as efficiently as possible, and how to make the day run more smoothly.

Think about the final product

How you’re using your photos can inform so much of what your food stylist does. If you plan on using your image for print ads, your food stylist needs to make space for text. If you’re using it for a small product label, your food stylist may simplify the image to make sure the product shines. Considering these factors ahead of time for a better final product.

Gather inspiration

Inspiration photos give your food stylist a better idea of what you’d like the final product to look like. Whether it’s other food images or videos you love, or simply images that convey a certain mood or vibe, any reference points can paint a clearer picture for your food stylist and help them achieve your goal.

Research your shoot location

Do some research into how your shoot location will be set up day-of. Is there a kitchen on-site, or will your stylist need to bring an induction burner? Is there running water, or should your stylist supply their own? Figuring out these logistical issues ahead of time can help the shoot day go more smoothly.
